The University of Alberta’s Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies is offering an exceptional opportunity for doctoral students from the Czech Republic: the Czech Doctoral Research Fellowship. This competitive program provides one PhD student with the chance to spend eight months in Canada, conducting research essential to their dissertation in a vibrant academic environment.

Fellowship Details

  • Program title: Czech Doctoral Research Fellowship
  • Host institution: The Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada
  • Purpose of stay: Primarily research activities directly related to the applicant’s doctoral dissertation
  • Fellowship period: 1 October 2026 – 31 May 2027

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Hold Czech citizenship
  • Be currently enrolled at a public university in the Czech Republic
  • Be pursuing a doctoral program in the humanities, social sciences, or arts
  • Have completed all doctoral requirements except the dissertation at the time of the stay
  • Have excellent command of English
  • Advantage: Knowledge of an additional Central European language (beyond Czech and Slovak)

Application Guidelines

  • Applications must be submitted by e‑mail directly to the Wirth Institute (WIACES) and CC’d to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MŠMT)
  • Deadline: 6 April 2026 (inclusive)
