CANADA – Research Fellowship for Doctoral Students Focused on Central European Topics
The University of Alberta’s Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies is offering an exceptional opportunity for doctoral students from the Czech Republic: the Czech Doctoral Research Fellowship. This competitive program provides one PhD student with the chance to spend eight months in Canada, conducting research essential to their dissertation in a vibrant academic environment.
Fellowship Details
- Program title: Czech Doctoral Research Fellowship
- Host institution: The Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada
- Purpose of stay: Primarily research activities directly related to the applicant’s doctoral dissertation
- Fellowship period: 1 October 2026 – 31 May 2027
- Capacity: One fellowship position is available
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Hold Czech citizenship
- Be currently enrolled at a public university in the Czech Republic
- Be pursuing a doctoral program in the humanities, social sciences, or arts
- Have completed all doctoral requirements except the dissertation at the time of the stay
- Have excellent command of English
- Advantage: Knowledge of an additional Central European language (beyond Czech and Slovak)
Application Guidelines
- Applications must be submitted by e‑mail directly to the Wirth Institute (WIACES) and CC’d to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MŠMT)
- Deadline: 6 April 2026 (inclusive)
